Yaiza

Yaiza is a municipality located south of the island of Lanzarote.  The Lanzarote Yaizapopulation is 10,894 inhabitants (2007), and its population density is 51.43 / km ², for an area of 211.84 km². The municipality is further south and west of the island of Lanzarote. Its main industry is tourism and agriculture. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, bounded on the north by the municipalities of Tinajo Tias.

At the southern end of the municipality of Yaiza in the area known as the “Rubicon”, was installed the first European settlement of the Canary Islands in 1402, from where they began the conquest of the archipelago.  The village of Yaiza is the town center, where the town hall is.

Opposite is the parish church of Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, patron saint of the municipality, whose feast is celebrated on September 8th. Yaiza is located at the edge of the area buried by volcanic eruptions produced in Lanzarote between 1730 and 1736, which gave its origin as the Timanfaya National Park.  The fundamental chronic eruptions were told by the then priest of Yaiza, Andres Lorenzo Curbelo. Yaiza stands out for its people who care for their landscape and their respect for traditional architecture.

Timanfaya, the town has other important natural areas such as Natural Monument of Los Ajaches, whose coasts are the beaches of Papagayo and the Charco Verde, also known as The Click.

Within the municipality is Femes village that serves as a main stage for the novel Mararia, by writer Rafael Arozarena.  Femes also has a church in honor of Saint Martial, patron saint of Lanzarote.  Playa Blanca, on the southern tip of the island, is the main tourist center of the town.
