The Geria

Geria is the one area of the island of Lanzarote, known for its unique volcanic landscape. It was used for the planting of vines for wine production, with plenty of variety.  The vines are planted in cones formed in the lapilli, known locally as picon and additionally protected by small dry stone walls.

They also planted fruit trees, like figs, in the same way. This type of planting Lanzarote LaGeria infoallows the plants to root more easily in the fertile soil, while the top layer of lapilli reduces evapotranspiration. Moreover, the shape of the holes and the wall are used to further protect crops from wind.

The area was protected by the Law 12/1987, of June 19th Declaration of the Canary Islands as a Natural Park of La Geria and reclassified by the Law 12/1994, of December 19th Natural Areas of the Canary Islands.  It has been declared as a Special Protection Area for birds (SPAs). The monument also includes the Cave of the Naturalist, a natural volcanic tube large.

The Natural Park of La Geria includes land in the towns of Yaiza, Tias, Tinajo, and San Bartolome Teguise, with an area of 5255 hectares. It includes several small towns: Masdache; Tegoyo Vega; La Asomada; Conil; Mozaga; Geria The House and The Isle of Florida. Linda to the west of the Volcanoes Park, surrounds the national park of Timanfaya.
