Montana Clara

Montana Clara is one of the islands of the Archipelago Chinijo north of Lanzarote, between La Graciosa and Alegranza. Politically it belongs to Montana Clarathe municipality of Teguise, in the province of Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. Like the rest of the Canary Islands, it is of volcanic origin. Its name is due to its volcanic cone, which covers large areas of the island.

The island has an area of 2.7 square kilometers, and its highest elevation is recorded in the Mariana, at 256 meters. Montana Clara has never been permanently inhabited. Despite its small size, it is an important fauna refuge. It is inhabited by species such as Eleonora falcon, osprey, Manx shearwaters, shrew and the piano pechialbo Canaria, whose main breeding colony in the Canary Islands is on this small island.

The island is owned by the heirs of Mariano Lopez Socas, who bought the island in 1957, and then became mayor of Haria in Lanzarote. In August 2007 the market went up for auction with a starting price of 9 million euros.

He tried to reach an agreement with the state to assume ownership of this island but the negotiations were unsuccessful. On 29th August 2007 it was announced that the Government would try to expropriate the island, but would seek to reach an amicable agreement with the current owners.
