La Cueva de los Verdes

La Cueva de los Verdes is part of a volcanic pipe located north on the island. Lanzarote Cueva De Los Verdes info 2 It was formed during the eruption of the volcano of La Corona, about 5000 years ago (before the Timanfaya eruption), where the lavas are very fluid to create a more compact large elongated cavity.

The tube has a total length of seven kilometers from the volcano of the Crown to the coast, prolonging their journey under the sea known as the Tunnel of Atlantis over 1500meters.  The level of the sea (during the last ice age) was 80 meters below the present level, making it the longest volcanic tunnel in the world.
The cave was used by the local population to seek refuge from attacks by Berber pirates that periodically ravaged the island, and is called the Cave of the Greens.  In the year 1964 they made interventions lighting inside the cave so it could be accessed. Since then they have formed part of the network of Arts, Culture and Tourism from the Cabildo de Lanzarote.  Its interior has an auditorium and corners of the room known as the aesthetes, the throat of death or the gate delay.
