Jameos del Agua

The Jameos Del Agua in the north of Lanzarote, is one of seven Centers for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Lanzarote.  This is an activity space created Timanfaya_Geysir lanzarote infofrom a series of natural jameos by Lanzarote artist Cesar Manrique, and aims to show visitors a space for contemplation of nature by man barely intervened.

The Jameos Del Agua, like the Cueva de los Verdes, is located inside the tunnel produced by the volcanic eruption of the volcano of the Crown. The Jameos Del Agua is located in the section of the tunnel closest to the coast.  It consists of at least three jameos or openings in the ground.  The “Jameos Del Agua” is the first Center for Art, Culture and Tourism created by Cesar Manrique, and reflects one of its creative pillars.  The harmony between nature and artistic creation.

In the early sixties, and due to the neglect of the environment, it was necessary to undertake tasks of cleaning and conditioning. Although the work was delayed, we can say the year 1966 was the date of opening to the public.  The special morphology of the volcanic pipe which caused many changes were made to the initial project, exploring creative alternatives and ensuring that the solutions were most appropriate.
In 1977, after more than a decade of work, the overall structure was composed of Jameos Del Agua.   There are new facilities for specific functions such as the museum of the “Casa de los Volcanes”.  This center has been dedicated, since 1987, to scientific and educational work on volcanology.
